Scorpion Exterminator

Scorpions are one of the most hated and feared pests found in Texas, and there are good reasons for the feelings most of us have about them. Anyone who has ever been stung by one will remember the pain for a long time, and it is simply human nature to be apprehensive of them wherever they are. It may have something to do with the threatening pinchers and stinger.

The most common species found in Texas is the Striped Bark Scorpion, with adults growing to about two or three inches. They are brownish with two large black stripes and black head markings. They are nocturnal and hide in cooler, dark places in the daytime. Inside buildings, they are likely to seek out laundry piles, shoes and boots, and closets. Outside they are usually found hiding under stacked wood, rocks, and mulch. A scorpion’s sting causes immediate pain and a searing, burning sensation. Their venom contains neurotoxins that affect a victim’s central nervous system. Those at greater risk from their venom can suffer convulsions, difficulty breathing, heart problems, and death.

Scorpions have been on Earth since long before the earliest dinosaurs and are likely the oldest surviving land animal species. They do not lay eggs, and when their young are born, they immediately gather on their mother’s back. They ride there under her protection until they are ready to go off on their own. By the way, that may take up to two years. Even though we rightfully fear their venom, scientists have used it to develop treatments for arthritis and cancer.

Elimination and lasting control of scorpions requires professional treatments and exclusionary methods. They are extremely hardy, and their tough shell protects them from most ordinary threats. Do-it-yourself treatments are rarely successful and can make an infestation problem worse. The proper choice of chemicals is very important and knowing where and how treatments should be properly applied is even more critical.

The professionals at Tranquility Pest Control use a total approach to scorpion control, using proper liquid chemicals and dusts and baits where appropriate. Regular treatments over time are essential to evaluating the effectiveness and establishing permanent infestation control. Scorpion control requires a holistic approach to overall pest control since multiple insects make up their preferred diet.

To exclude scorpions from the inside of homes and businesses, we inspect for weep holes and other cracks that need to be plugged, covered, or screened. We also look for areas around roof eaves, pipes, and other possible entry points that should be sealed. We recommend that trash, wood, bricks, or other large objects not be stacked or piled around the edges of buildings. Careful landscaping and grass trimming near foundations also help keep scorpions away.
